Spain is a great location for skiing. As the second most mountainous region in Europe it’s a great place to choose if you are planning a skiing holiday. Here’s a short guide to ski locations in Spain.

The Pyrenees is the most well known of ski destinations in Spain and there are a number or fantastic resorts worth skiing at. It’s not the only place you can ski in Spain however so take a look at our list of locations for more information before making your booking.

Forming the natural border between France and Spain the Pyrenees is a great place for a skiing holiday and has a large number of fantastic resorts. Ski resorts can be found in Andorra, Catalonia and Aragon. Popular resorts include Formigal and Baqueira however there are numerous others all over the Pyrenees and you are sure to find a resort to suit your holiday. With too many resorts to mention here it’s a good idea to either go on a recommendation or do a little bit of research.

Near the Costa del Sol and just half an hour from Granada offers the longest season for skiing, sometimes for over 5 months of the year. The Sierra Nevada is the most southerly skiing region in Europe and as such it is possible to enjoy both summer and winter sports in the area making it a great place for a family holiday.

From the borders of Galicia to the western limit of the Basque Mountains in northern Spain along the coastline the Cantabrian Mountains are a great alternative for someone looking to go on a skiing holiday in Spain. There are a number of resorts in the region including Alto Campoo, Manzaneda, Leitariegos, Valgrande-Pajares, San Isidro and Fuentes de Invierno. It’s another lovely location worth visiting if you are planning on skiing in Spin.

Sistema Central in the Iberian Peninsula is another great region for skiing and is more centrally situated than the others. Being close to Madrid it’s a good region to go skiing in if you would like to be more centrally situated for your holiday. Resorts in the area include Puerto de Navacerrada, La Pinilla, Valdesquí and Valdesquí.

Swedens eight thousand kilometres of coastline and forests cover 70 per cent of the countrys total land area. Naturally, there is an assortment of skiing possibilities. Southern Lapland is home to Hemavan/Tärnaby — the ski area for those seeking the great expanses with snow peaks at 1,800m above sea level.

The most famous ski resort in Sweden is Arefjallen, comfortably nestled by a large frozen lake. The resort boasts the largest ski area in northern Europe with 100kms of quality ski runs. The Freeride and Red Bull Big Air competitions are held here, in addition to the Skutskjutet (April), the worlds largest downhill race. The resort itself is comprised of ancient buildings and a busy après-ski scene, located in five distinct villages.

Storlien is situated on the Norwegian border and best known for its awe-inspiring beauty and crisp mountain air — and is also the site of the Swedish Royal familys winter chalet. All levels of ability are well catered for here, with terrain surrounded by spectacular vistas. The resort village is quaint and permeated by appealing traditional wooden chalets and bigger timber-framed buildings housing homes and shops.

Riksgransen is the world’s northernmost ski resort, situated in the extreme north of Sweden and into Lapland, near the Norwegian border. This extreme latitude gives the resort 24 hours of sunlight in the spring months, creating the perfect ski and snowboard experience. The relaxed 100-year-old ski centre offers an amazing setting but has limited services. The one hotel here has space for 500 guests and also provides the dining and après-ski entertainment. Other ski resorts in Sweden include: Bjursås, Bydalen and Sälen.

Stockholms Arlanda International Airport is 45kms away from the city centre and receives daily flights from most European capitals. Swedens bus and train systems are extensive and provide quick routes throughout the country. Buses are often the only option once you get away from the cities.

If you are travelling by car, Swedish roads are of a high standard. Because of the mountains along the border with Norway, there are limited border crossings; however, the tunnel under the Øresund, at the mouth of the Baltic, connects Malmö with Copenhagen in less than 20 minutes. Ferries are a popular method to transport to Stockholm and other cities.

Switzerland is renowned for its magnificent scenery and breathtaking views. There is something to suit everyone, from family orientated resorts in serene villages to vibrant laces with fantastic après ski. It’s most expensive to visit Swiss ski resorts in winter, and slightly less so during the rest of the year.

St Moritz is the premier ski and social resort of eastern Switzerland. As one of the finest ski resorts, it boasts an international reputation for its breathtakingly gorgeous setting in Switzerlands Elgadine Valley, perfect ski slopes and off-piste choices, magnificent après-ski scene, and upscale shopping opportunities. The resort has been host to two Winter Olympics and an FIS World Ski Championship.

Switzerland’s most popular ski resort, Zermatt, is an outstanding winter holiday choice. Tucked in at the base of the Matterhorn it is ringed by over twenty mountain peaks. Skiers and snowboarders come from all over the world, attracted by the superb ski slopes and the sense of tradition.

A tiny Alpine resort, Andermatt is situated close to the Gotthard pass in Switzerland. You will find a good choice of ski slopes, from the gentle slope for the novice to the challenging runs for the more experienced skiers. As it is nearly 3000m high it is renowned for its reliable snow conditions. As a bonus, there are majestic views of the gigantic Gemstock.

The busy airports of Geneva and Zürich (Kloten Airport) both receive long-haul flights from cities around the world, though it may be more convenient to arrive via connections through London or Frankfurt. Rail is a popular and convenient way to travel around Switzerland and non-stop services run to and from many adjacent European cities such as Nice, Paris, Munich, Vienna and Milan. Many visitors choose to arrive in Switzerland by car, in order to better enjoy the magnificent scenery en route.
