Ski Train season cancelled

The popular Ski Train that had ferried passengers between Denver and Winter Park since 1940 will not run at all during the 2009–2010 season. Iowa Pacific Holdings has not been able to reach an operational agreement with Amtrak, which was to provide crews to operate the train.

Briton Nigel Jackson dies on Chamonix ski slopes

Severe Alpine weather has claimed the life of a British skier who is thought to have been caught in a small avalanche on Christmas Day. The forty-three-year-old man has been identified as Londoner, Nigel Jackson. He was holidaying in La Tour in Chamonix with his girlfriend and two other friends over the Christmas period.

Slovenias Andrej Jerman wins downhill in Bormio

Slovenia’s Andrej Jerman won the Bormio downhill to claim only the second World Cup win of his career. The 31-year-old completed the bumpy 3.27 kilometre Stelvio course in two minutes 0.32 seconds, more than half a second ahead of Switzerland’s Didier Defago.

Lots more snow is forecast for Whistler in Canada

It should be a fairly snowy week in Austria. Most resorts are expecting between 10cm and 30cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes. The freezing level is expected to hover around 1400m in many places which means only slopes above around 1300m will receive the snow. Rain is likely beneath this altitude.
