Heavy snow across the Western states of the US has been described as “an early Christmas present” by one Californian resort. Resorts around Lake Tahoe on the west coast and as far inland as Utah have been reporting several feet of fresh snow, dramatically boosting conditions in perfect time for the coming peak weeks of Christmas and New Year.

Squaw Valley in California is one of the big winners receiving six-and-a-half feet of snow in the past seven days. Conditions  are now superb.

“Today, the sky opened for a classic “Squaw Valley blue bird powder day”, with deep untouched snow and brilliant sunshine.” said a resort spokeswoman.

The big snowfalls of the past week have made up more than three-quarters of Squaw’s 8½ feet of snow. Current base depths measure four-six feet at mid-mountain and resort is open for to bottom skiing, with 18 of 33 lifts spinning. It will be 100% open for the busy holiday period.

More snow storms are forecast through next weekend meaning the ample base will be even deeper for the heart of the holiday season that historically begins the third week in December.
