A snow reporting agency has announced more than 50 ‘powder alarms’ today as heavy snow has been reported across the Alps.

A ‘powder alarm’ is automatically triggered when a resort reports more than 20cm (8 inches) of snow has fallen in the previous 24 hours.
However more than 70% off the alarms issued today are for much bigger falls, the greatest claimed by Switzerland’s Sedrun and the small Italian resort of Alpe Devero with a metre and 1.1 metres respectively.
The snowfall alarms are arriving from right across the Alps however, and many big name resorts are reporting healthy falls.
Italy’s Medesimo has 90cm (three feet) of new snow and there’s 60cm (two feet) for Cortina. The Monterosa region of North Western Italy which had to postpone its opening last weekend, has had 50cm (20 inches) and announced it will now open next weekend.
Other big resorts reporting the same fall depth include Serre Chevalier in France, Andermatt in Switzerland and Livigno in Italy.
Klosters, Grindelwald, Gstaad, Risoul and Montgenevre have all reported at least a foot (30cm) of new powder.
The number of alarms looks likely to continue through the remainder of the day as more resorts upload their data and the extra good news is that the snow is expected to continue falling in coming days.
