As the first holiday weekend of the summer arrives, local ski resorts are gearing up for the warmer months. Both Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort and Seven Springs Mountain Resort have several summertime activities available. Scott Bender, vice president of operations for Hidden Valley, said the resort is entering the summer months after a great ski season.
“We started with free skiing the first two weekends,” he said. “That momentum, and the weather itself, was great for skiing. All and all we were very pleased with the ski season.”
This year, activities will be offered for kids at the Lake George Activities Center. The center will provide painting and other activities for children, along with access to sporting equipment during the weekends. Lake George also features catch-and-release fishing, mountain boarding and biking and paddle boats. All activities are open to resort guests and the general public.
Marketing a resort that is primarily known for skiing can be a challenge, Bender said. The resort is utilizing an e-mail “e-blast” to keep people updated about resort activities.
“It’s a great vehicle to be able to attract guests in the summertime,” he said.
He added that offering great values for families in today’s economy also helps.
“We are in the process of putting together some packages, in addition to golf and overnight packages, really promoting Hidden Valley as the hub,” he said. “We are right in the center of the Laurel Highlands.”
The resort is also attracting conferences, banquets and weddings. Any time the resort can bring people into the region, it helps the local economy, Bender added.
“(Conferences) are very important for the spring, summer and fall business for us,” he said.
Anna Weltz, Seven Springs communications manager, said overall the resort also had a good ski season.
“It was a good season despite the lack of natural snow during the month of March and the poor conditions during the Christmas holiday period,” she said.
Memorial Day weekend officially kicks off the resort’s summer season.
This summer season will focus on the opening of Trillium Spa and the new sporting clays facility. The resort also offers Kids’ Adventure Day Camp, UTA tours, fly-fishing and other summer activities.
“So while mom and daughter are unwinding in the spa, dad and junior can hit the links or vie for the trophy trout,” Weltz said.
The bike park is opening today and will remain open during weekends until mid-June. The sporting clays facility will be open soon, Weltz said.
“Trillium Spa is off to a great start and it seems quite a few people are taking advantage of the Trillium Spa Experience package and spoiling themselves or their loved ones,” Weltz said.
