The weather in Europe this week should stay very wintry with low temperatures and heavy snowfall forecast for the end of the week, particularly in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Bad Kleinkirchheim in Austria is expecting 53cm of snow to fall by Saturday, with the heaviest being on Thursday and Friday. 35cm is expected on these two days alone.

Elsewhere in Austria it should be snowy as well, although with slightly smaller amounts.

It should get no warmer than -7C in Obertauern this week, with the freezing level hovering around 500m.

France isn’t expecting quite as much snow as Austria, but plenty of snow is forecast. 24cm should fall at Tignes, with most landing on Friday. Like Austria it should stay cold all week which will keep the snow in excellent condition.

The first half of January in the western Alps is expected to be colder than the seasonal average, which is good news for the area.

Thursday and Friday should be exceptionally snowy in Italy. Chiesa is expecting an awesome 70cm of snow to fall over the two days. This is quite typical of many Italian areas which can go for a while without snow then get a big dump.

Livigno, Madonna di Campiglio and Cortina are all expecting upwards of 60cm of snow by Saturday 9th January.

Up in Scandinavia the cold is showing no signs of disappearing and if anything it should get even colder. -26C is the expected high at Oppdal in Norway on Thursday 7th January but it should be sunny.

Before then it should be slightly warmer, around -14C, with light snow expected on Wednesday.

Åre in Sweden will be similarly cold, with temperatures expected to drop below -30C at times. Wrap up very warm and cover exposed skin if you are skiing in Scandinavia this week.

It should be a generally dry, cold and sunny week in most areas of the USA. Two exceptions are Smugglers’ Notch and Timberline.

Timberline is expecting a warm week with rain to mid level at times. The resort has quite a deep snow base so there shouldn’t be any need to worry about too much melting.

Snow will fall up high however, giving some of the powder the resort is famous for. A temperature of around 3C can be expected at base level.

In Colorado dry weather is expected. It should be fairly cold however, with a daytime high of -12C expected at Vail on Thursday and Friday.

This cold weather should at least allow them to have the snow cannons running constantly, so the snow will remain in excellent condition in most places.

Cold and dry weather is also expected in western Canada. Nowhere is expecting much snow, the most of which being at Skeena heli ski area in northern British Columbia.

Here, 22cm of snow should fall by the end of the week with a sign of warmer weather for next weekend.
