It should be a fairly snowy week in Austria. Most resorts are expecting between 10cm and 30cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes. The freezing level is expected to hover around 1400m in many places which means only slopes above around 1300m will receive the snow. Rain is likely beneath this altitude.
The same should be true in France. Fortunately most French resorts are higher than Austrian ones so it should fall as snow at most places. This will not necessarily be the case in the middle of the week, when rain is likely even at 2000m at Les Deux Alpes. A cold day on Saturday is then expected to give way to another warm day on Sunday, with possible rain at lower altitudes.
26cm of snow is expected to fall at Gstaad in Switzerland. It should fall fairly steadily through the week, keeping the upper slopes in great condition. Lower down the snow will be very wet or it could even fall as rain. This is the case for many Swiss resorts, where rain is likely below 1800m until Thursday then it should go colder.
Up in Scandinavia it is still very cold. This is the source of the cold weather in the UK at the moment, although it is a lot colder there. Geilo in Norway is expecting a high of -23°C on Wednesday but at least it should be sunny. 5cm of fresh snow is forecast between Tuesday and Sunday which will help keep the pistes in great condition, along with the cold weather.
Lots of snow is also expected on the other side of the Atlantic. The east coast in particular is in the grip of a severe winter storm, which is expected to dump more than 60cm of snow on many resorts in the area this week. 64cm is expected at Sunday River in Maine. Most of this snow should fall on New Years Day and 2nd Jan, amounting to 54cm on these two days alone.
The same amount of snow is expected at Timberline in Oregon. Heavy snow is expected on New Years Eve and New Years Day. It should be a great way to see in the New Year, with loads of powder and wintry weather.
It should also be snowy at Jackson Hole too, around the same time as Timberline. Temperatures of -12°C should accompany this snowfall which will mean it falls as dry powder. The resort hasn’t received much snow so far this season so the more they get now the better.
Lots more snow is forecast for Whistler in Canada, bringing an end to a recent dry and cold spell. 74cm is expected to fall by the coming weekend. The freezing level is expected to remain below 1000m all week so snow will fall down to the village most of the time. The upper slopes should be awesome with all the fresh snow and will continue Whistlers record breaking year so far.
Other Canadian resorts aren’t expecting the same amounts of snow as Whistler but the good news is that it should still be cold and snowy.
