Lots of snow is expected right across Europe this weekend. Many resorts, ranging from France to Austria, are expecting between 30cm and 40cm of fresh snow. In France, Villard de Lans is expecting an impressive 55cm to land over the weekend. The resort has had a slow start to the season and only a few weeks ago there was no snow on the lower slopes. The new snow should come as a big relief.
Bad Kleinkirchheim in Austria should be very snowy this weekend too. 26cm of snow should fall with the temperatures remaining cold. Saturday could be a bit warmer, with the freezing level rising to around 1400m. It could fall as sleet or wet snow on Saturday afternoon but higher up it will be a lot better. Colder and more settled weather is expected over the whole of Austria after the snowy weekend.
Italy and Switzerland are expecting snow too. Passo Tonale in Italy should receive around 41cm of snow on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It hasn’t snowed much since Christmas so this should improve their pistes a lot. Lighter snow is expected in the rest of Switzerland and Italy with the temperature below -3C most of the time.
Extremely cold weather dominates in Scandinavia still. -30C can be expected at all of our featured resorts in Norway, Sweden and Finland. No new snow is expected but the cold weather will keep the existing snow in great condition.
It should be fairly dry this weekend across the whole of the USA. Some areas will be very cold while others are much warmer. The most snow in the country is expected at Timberline in Oregon, where 18cm should fall by next Tuesday 12th January. This will only be on the upper slopes however as warm weather could bring rain to the lower ones. The east coast should receive around 10cm of snow by Tuesday next week. It will stay very cold so expect the snow to be in good condition for the foreseeable future.
In Colorado dry and cold will dominate. Breckenridge is expecting sunshine all day, every day until at least Tuesday 12th January. The first half of the weekend will be very cold but the temperatures should rise a bit by next week, with the freezing level recovering to around 2200m.
Up in Canada the story is largely the same, if a little snowier. The only real exception is Whistler once again, due to its coastal location. 65cm of snow should fall on the upper slopes by Tuesday 12th giving some awesome powder skiing when it does. Further inland less snow is forecast. 10cm is expected at Big White over the weekend and it should be fairly warm too, no colder than -11C.
