The town of Wrightwood is being evacuated as San Bernardino County Fire crews continue to battle the Sheep Fire, which has consumed 7,500 acres.
Some 4,000 residents, practically the entire population of Wrightwood, are now under mandatory evacuations, San Bernardino County Fire officials said.
The fire, which as been burning since Saturday afternoon was 20 percent contained as of 7 p.m., officials said.
Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol reports state Route 2, east of
Wrightwood, has been closed and the only road open for evacuees from is state Route 2 west to Mountain High Ski Area, then Big Pines Highway (route N-4) north to Route 138, according to news wire reports.
The fire broke out about 2 p.m. Saturday in the northwest corner of Lytle Creek, a small town north of San Bernardino roughly 75 miles northwest of Palm Springs. Flames are burning through chaparral and timber, officials said.
Four homes in Swarthout Canyon were destroyed by flames, officials said.
Thirteen hand crews, 72 engines and four dozers have been sent to the fire. Ten helicopters and nine air tankers have been assigned to the fire but, as of 10:30 a.m., remained grounded due to high winds and low visibility, fire officials said.
