Ski Peru – Peruvian ski resorts
Ski holidays in Peru
Peru
As spring and summer sun melts the snow in the Northern Hemisphere, savvy skiers pack up and travel south to the great ski centers in South America where the ski season begins in mid-June and runs to October. You’ll find the best conditions in July and August.
Though by no means the best place to look for skiing in the Andes there are some skiing areas in Peru, a couple of tiny resorts and some goodski-mountaineering opportunities.
Every July there are plenty of people ski at Pastoruri in the southern Cordillera Blanca, and various races and championships are held. Also in the Cordillera Blanca the traverse of the 6000m peaks of Copa and Hualcan is said to make a good ski trip, although the snow-lineis a long way from the valley.
Pastoruri is the only ‘ski resort’ in Peru. But it’s not much of a resort. There is from time to time onerope-towon a small glacier at over 4500m that is rapidly shrinking and these days is often icy. Access is via the town of Huaraz about 8 hours north of Lima.
Huascaran is positioned in the central Andes, amongst the Cordillera Blanca range. The resort has a vertical drop of 1219 mtrs. We do not have any information about cross country skiing at Huascaran. The nearest airport to Huascaran is Lima.
If you’re travelling here, we recommend that you take a good guidebook. We like the layout and content of the Lonely Planet book. It provides an excellent mix of travel information and practical advice. Click below to purchase. You won’t regret buying it!
