Scottish ski areas now open

Three more of Scotland’s five ski areas have opened following heavy snowfall across the country, only Glencoe remains closed. Glenshee, Nevis Range and The Lecht have all opened, joining Cairngorm, above Aviemore, which has been open since November and continues to offer the most skiing in the country.

Nevis Range near Fort William, which celebrated its 20th birthday last weekend, has good snow cover on the upper mountain with main runs complete with powdery snow on a hard base. There’s lots of powdery snow on the lower mountain too but cover is thin off the pisted runs, some of which are narrow.

Back on the Eastern side of the Highlands at Glenshee, some of the beginner lifts have opened today with groomed fresh snow. There’s plenty of snow for sledging and the cafe is open daily.

At the Lecht the main runs are complete with new snow, although some trails are narrow and thin in places. There are ample nursery areas.

At Cairngorm the ski area reports, “Another fabulous day for snow sports with over 1,000 skiers and boarders enjoying excellent conditions.” These numbers were probably boosted by woidespread school closures in the area.

There’s been good visibility, light winds and temperatures a relatively balmy -4C at 900m. As well as the funicular, which is making mid-station stops, the M1, Cas, Ciste and Ptarmigan tows are all open. The Top Bowls is reported to be in great condition.

The Home Road is not advisable due to gravel just under the snow but good skiers/boarders who know their way can pick a route back to the bottom via lower slopes and burnside. Off piste conditions are also described as “great!”
More snow is forecast through the next 72 hours at all areas.
