At Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre on Saturday, it looked like the Winter Olympics in August. Snowboarders flipped off of ramps in the middle of Lynchburg overlooking Liberty University. They were snowboarding on a synthetic surface called Snowflex.
“It’s just like real snow,” said Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.
Saturday was Grand Opening Day. In the ski shop, student and snowboarder, Eric Hegreness said he had plans to travel after college.
“First hope was to immediately move out west. I wanted to move out west and ride and get involved with that,” he said.
Then he heard the Snowflex ski slope was coming to Liberty. Now, he wants to start up the university’s first ski and snowboard club.
“We’re also letting other colleges join the division as well,” he said.
That will bring more people to the area for club events in hopes they will keep coming back to enjoy it.
Terry Di Stasi, the Director of Business Development, says people are curious.
“The first initial thing is ‘what is this?’ Once they try it, they think, ‘yeah, there’s something in this,’“ he said.
It’s something Falwell says will be a good marketing tool to attract students and visitors as the only university in the world with this type of ski slope.
“Of course we’re going to toot our own horn,” he said.
This is something for everybody.
“We’ve got a lot of inquiries worldwide, from the U.S., Mexico, Columbia, Brazil,” said Di Stasi.
It’s a way to boost the economy.
“Just really looking more to progress each other and the area around us,” said Hegreness.
