Mount Hutt ski resort visitor numbers up

An influx of bored Christchurch residents could help buoy Mt Hutt’s ski season. The popular Canterbury skifield had expected the number of skiers and snowboarders hitting the slopes this winter to be down on previous years because of the fall-out from February’s quake but early indications suggest the impact on the season may not be as bad as first feared. James Coddington, chief executive of NZSki, which owns Mt Hutt, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, said with recreational activities in Christchurch limited because of quake damage, it seemed many people had decided it would be a good time to try skiing.

A slalom race for both ladies and men was rescheduled from Mt Hotham (AUS) to Mt Hutt (NZE). Besides the technical events, the series included four super-G races and two super combined competitions for both genders.

NZSki entice skiers to Queenstown with bumper results

New Zealand’s largest ski-field operator is not buying into the recession. A bumper start to the ski season is just icing on the mountain for NZSki, which is midway through a 10-year investment plan. The company has already spent $78 million and has no intention of slowing down, chief executive James Coddington said.
