Womens super combined postponed at Winter Olympics

The opening women’s Alpine skiing event of the Vancouver Olympics, the super-combined scheduled for Sunday, will be rescheduled because of poor weather. The event can only take place if a downhill training run has been completed and that will not be possible on Saturday with priority given to the first men’s race, the blue-riband downhill, FIS women’s race director Atle Skaardal said.

Mens downhill in doubt at Winter Olympics

Saturday’s men’s downhill, the premier event in Olympic Alpine skiing, will be postponed unless there is a significant improvement in the course condition. “If the slope remains the same as it is right now, there will certainly be no downhill,” Hujara told reporters.

The men’s Olympic downhill moved a step closer to going ahead as planned on Saturday after the field all completed a training run despite poor weather. Fog cut short practice sessions on Wednesday and Thursday but all 89 starters have now had a mandatory run, allowing the race to go ahead. However, the weekend weather forecast for Whistler is for heavy snow, which could force a postponement.

The 2010 Winter Olympics will begin under a serious cloud after the death of a Georgian luger in training on Friday ahead of the opening ceremony. The 21-year-old Nodar Kumaritashvili crashed at high speed at the Whistler Sliding Centre. There are now serious doubts over the staging of all the sliding events.

Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics timetable schedule and map of events

The 2010 Winter Olympics will be held from the 12th- 28th February in Vancouver, Canada, with events also taking place in Whistler, Cypress Mountain and Richmond. Over the 17 days, 5,500 athletes and officials from over 80 countries will descend on British Columbia for an event that will be watched by some 3 billion worldwide television viewers.

Eurosport will be providing round the clock coverage of events. Most of the alpine events will also be shown live on BBC2, hosted by the Ski Sunday team. The 40-second clip will break tonight on BBC1, as the corporation starts promoting its forthcoming coverage of the Winter Olympics, which begin in Vancouver on 12 February.
