Southern hemisphere opens for skiing

The 2011 ski season in the southern hemisphere has officially begun today with the little southern African nation of Lesotho claiming first-to-open with its Afri-ski centre opening a 600m long slope. The resort beat New Zealand resort Coronet Peak which had planned to open last Friday but was thwarted by unseasonably warm temperatures in the country, which recorded its warmest ever May. Plans to open other resorts there this weekend have also floundered so far as temperatures remain a little too high for snowmaking and there’s no natural snowfall yet.
