Much of Europe welcomed notable snowfall on Tuesday 31st January. Although many locations in France, Switzerland and Austria have subsequently received further snowfall, it has been rather light in comparison to Tuesday’s snowfall. Heavy cloud cover continues over many European resorts on Thursday 2nd February where Austrian resorts could receive additional snowfall. However, in Switzerland and France, it appears the sun is slowly burning the clouds away with a handful of resorts enjoying a pleasant day.

America gets fresh snow snow boosting skiing conditions

After bright and sunny weather towards the end of last week, thick cloud cover and fresh snowfall returned to the vast majority of European resorts over the weekend. Although somewhat lighter than other recent and heavy snowstorms, it made another notable improvement to the piste conditions and increased the piste depths across the continent.

After a significant snowstorm last weekend across many European resorts, conditions earlier this week were extremely varied across the whole continent. Resorts experienced a range of conditions from falling snow to high winds and overcast skies to sunshine. However, on Thursday 26th January the French, Italian, Austrian and Swiss resorts enjoyed fantastic clear blue skies with relatively low winds.

All our featured European resorts have now made a full recovery after heavy snowfall and high winds had a dramatic impact on resort access roads and lift operations last weekend. Since then each day has seen increased sunshine and on Thursday, all European resorts enjoyed bright blue sunny skies. Furthermore, the snowstorms left the pistes in excellent conditions where skiers have made the most of fresh powdery conditions. What’s more, temperatures are largely below freezing which should keep the pistes in excellent shape.

Further heavy snowfall over the weekend was a good way to celebrate the end of one year and the start of the next. So much fell in some places that resorts had to close. Most of the Chamonix Valley had roads closed at times this weekend, but then wet precipitation below about 2000m in the Alps on Sunday 1st January helped to clear access.

The majority of our featured European resorts enjoyed a couple of days of beautiful clear blue skies over the Christmas holiday period. However, on Thursday 29th December the conditions significantly changed with cloudy skies bringing light snowfall to many resorts in western Europe. This snowfall is expected to notably increase on Friday 30th December and throughout the forthcoming weekend, meaning a great powdery end to 2011.
