Andermatt ski resort gets upgrade

The Swiss resort of Andermatt is not especially well known on the UK market, but it’s one of the classics where the first ski lifts were installed back in the 1930s. Two large Swiss ski areas will be joined together with a network of 18 new lifts to create one of the biggest ski regions in the Alps if recently announced plans by an Egyptian billionaire come to fruition. The billionaire, Samih Sawiris, is already mid-way through a project to add half-a-dozen luxury hotels as well as lots of other new property to the resort of Andermatt, but he now wants to make staying in them when they start to open in 2013/14 by joining the skiing at Andermatt to that at nearby Sedrun with the new lifts, creating the second biggest ski area in Switzerland in the process. The total piste kilometres of the two areas is already 250km even before new pistes are added to connect them.

Zermatt ski resort ice slide

With two of the three glaciers currently open for snow sports in Switzerland due to close after this weekend, only the year round snow sports destination of Zermatt – of only two in the world – will be open for skiing and boarding in the country as we enter June. Snowsports take place on the glacier beneath the Klein Matterhorn, which is served, in summer only, by Europe’s highest lift, a drag up to 3,899m. But two new attractions have been unveiled for visitors this summer besides the high altitude skiing and boarding.
