Sponsored Article New Indoor Snow Centre within reach of London

The UK may only be a 2 hour flight from the Alps but once the snow has melted in popular resorts like Val D’Isere and Zermatt, the residents of London usually resign themselves to putting their ski and snowboard equipment into storage for a few months and turning their attentions to other pursuits until the next winter season comes around. Not that running, cycling, rowing or playing tennis aren’t great fun, especially when the sun is shining, but for a committed winter sports fan, the prospect of eight months or more without any snow action can be pretty demoralising.

British Olympic skier Alain Baxter cycling his way to becoming a paperboy

Olympic skier Alain Baxter doesn’t look right riding a bike. On the slopes he was poetry in motion. In the saddle he’s awkward — as if it’s his first ride since his paper round. But cycling is the Scot’s new sport after quitting as Britain’s most successful skier earlier this year. He’d better get pedalling if he’s to reach the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year.

Sir Ian Blair, a whitewash, a ski buddy and £3 million

OK. So that’s not Sir Ian Blair in the photo but it may as well be. Former UK Metropolitan Police Sir Ian Blair has been cleared of dishonesty for awarding £3 million worth of contracts to his skiing buddy. However, reports from the Evening Standard are saying that the conclusions reached by former Chief Inspector of Constabulary Sir Ronnie Flanagan did not match findings made by his investigators.

The most enraging, divisive, temperature-raising show on TV is on BBC1 on Thursday nights. It’s not Question Time. It’s not a hapless comedy either. No, this is sandwiched between the two and is called The Skiing Weather. Each week, round about the time most of us are thinking gloomily about the following morning’s traffic jams, delayed trains and overcrowded buses full of commuters, a smiling young woman tells us to cheer up, as there’s excellent powdery stuff at Val d’Isere, but we should watch out for sticky offpiste conditions in Kitzbuhel.
