Telluride Ski Resort made a proposal to the Town of Mountain Village earlier this month to build an outdoor summer amphitheatre on its slopes. The facility would host summer and fall concerts, along with other festivals and events, during daytime and nighttime.
“This is a perfect location for an outdoor music venue, as the proposed area is a natural amphitheater with a gentle upward slope. It just needs to be improved for the use,” said Dave Riley, CEO of the resort.
The venue would be built on lower Misty Maiden ski run, just above Heritage Plaza in Mountain Village. The ski run would be terraced and park grass developed and maintained. A stage would be installed with electrical service, and a concession area added near the bottom of Competition Hill. The venue would accommodate up to 8,000 people in a space of about three acres.
Even without the proposed amphitheatre, Mountain Village does host a series of summer sunset concerts on Wednesdays. In addition to being a winter ski destination, the area is known for its summer and fall activities including wine, bluegrass, jazz, chamber music, and film festivals.
Mountain Village is situated in the heart of Telluride Ski Resort at an elevation of 9,500 feet. Relatively modern architecturally, Mountain Village is connected by a 2.5-mile gondola down to the historic town of Telluride that sits in a box canyon at an elevation of 8,750 feet.
